What Does "Redneck" Really Mean? The Blair Mountain Story Behind the Word

Ask most people where the word "redneck" comes from and you'll hear a joke about sunburned farmers. That's part of the story. But there's another chapter most Americans were never taught, and it's the reason The American Redneck Company exists.

A Word With Working Roots

By the late 1800s, "redneck" was a label for poor, rural working people: farmers and laborers whose necks burned red under the sun. It was usually an insult, aimed at people who worked with their hands.

The Red Bandanas of Blair Mountain

In late August 1921, in Logan County, West Virginia, roughly 10,000 coal miners marched to organize a union and break the company-town system that controlled their wages, their housing, and their lives. Many tied red bandanas around their necks so they could recognize one another. They were Black, white, and immigrant miners, and they marched together.

They were met by thousands of armed defenders organized by the county sheriff and the coal operators. Private planes dropped homemade bombs on the miners. The fighting lasted about five days and ended only when federal troops arrived. It remains the largest armed labor uprising in American history.

Whatever the word meant before, at Blair Mountain a red neck meant you stood with the people beside you.

Why It Still Matters
